My Review of the Vax V-124A Dual V Upright Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner
Some friends from abroad had included a weekend stay with us without much notice and instead of thinking how lovely it would be to see them after such a long time, my immediate thoughts turned to my stained and dirty carpets that I still hadn’t got round to cleaning before Christmas last year. I wouldn’t say I am particularly house proud but I couldn’t stand the thought of having guests with such filthy carpets to greet them.
I sent my partner out to buy the cheapest carpet cleaner from a local catalogue store but as soon as I tried to assemble it the plastic handle broke in two. Back to the store for a refund! I then clicked on Amazon to see what they had to offer and equally important, how quickly they could get one delivered. After reading the reviews it was a toss up between a Vax and a Bissell.
No more compromises on price and quality. I chose the Vax V-124A Dual V because of it’s sturdy build, compact look, and numerous features. I spent more than I initially intended to but when I considered that this was a machine that would last me a long time and wouldn’t fall apart whilst unpacking it I decided to go for it. And if I chose this particular carpet washer I could also have it within a few days…Bingo!
After using my Vax carpet cleaner my conclusion is that it’s not worth messing around with cheap/cheaper versions. If you’re going to spend money on something that you intend to use over a long period of time, choose from a reputable brand like Vax and invest that extra bit of cash in a quality product that is going to save you hundreds of pounds in the future.
What to Look for When Buying a Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner
Built to last
There’s no doubt that the Vax V-124A Dual V Upright Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner is built to last. It has a very sturdy frame and handle (that didn’t snap when I got it out of the box!). This is a robust bit of equipment that if used correctly will carry on cleaning your carpets and upholstery for years.
Dual V Technolgy
The reason the Vax out-pipped a Bissell carpet cleaner was mainly down to the Dual V that only comes with Vax products. It’s patented Dual V twin air path technology sucks up the water from the carpet with such power and intensity that they are virtually dry within a couple of hours. You can actually feel the power of the suction as you wash.
The unique patented SpinScrub technology gently brushes the carpet clean and is also used on the hand tool that is supplied. The SpinScrub hand tool is designed for stairs and upholstery and is also very handy for difficult to reach areas.
Versatility
I enjoyed using my cleaner so much that I didn’t want to stop. Vax recommends that you pass over each area of carpet slowly between two and four times so it’s not a quick job but it is very satisfying seeing the dirt lift up and your carpet taking on a new appearance. A simple click and the upholstery tool is connected to the hose ready to tackle upholstery, cushions and stair carpet. The upholstery hose is a generous 2.3 m so is ample for most stair cases. I also discovered that it cleans my curtains as well as my carpets. I used the upholstery tool with the curtains stretched out on the floor and got great results. However, I wouldn’t recommend that anyone else do this as this use is not suggested by the manufacturers. I took a chance after doing a sample test and it worked for me.
The Vax V-124A Dual V can also pick up liquid spills without actually washing the carpet or upholstery surface. There is a simple slide setting that can be set to adjust the brushes to either on or off, and in addition there are two slide settings located on the handle stem to allow you to choose from wash or rinse…great for switching modes easily.
Deep clean assurance
The Vax V-124 Dual V carpet cleaner has a clean water capacity of 3.7 L and a dirty water capacity of 3.3 L. The separate clean and dirty water tanks combined with the rotating brushes produces deep down cleaning and spruced up the appearance of my carpets all in one go. A useful automatic shut off is engaged when the dirty water tank is full to remind you to empty it. A clever automix cleaning system ensures that the right amount of solution to clean water is provided so you aren’t left guessing or measuring the liquids.
The heated cleaning system that this machine uses acts like a hair dryer and also improves the overall standard of cleaning…very clever.
Maintenance
It’s important to empty and rinse both water tanks and clean the dirty water tank lid after every use. Make sure that they are dried out completely before re-attaching them. It’s not necessary to empty the solution container which can be left for the next time. The tools can be lifted out of the compact caddy and dried separately too.

The Vax V-124A Dual V could be a little heavy for some users but as slow pushing of the cleaner is recommended and the fact that it glides easily over carpets, most people should be able to manage it with ease.
Although it is a very good carpet washing solution, Vax’s own brand is a bit pricey. There is always the choice of buying cheaper solutions but you often get what you pay for. I think I will stick to the Vax Ultra+ Limited Edition Orange scented solution that I purchased from Amazon at the same time because it simply smells divine.
I’m slightly hard of hearing so the noise that some owners referred to in their reviews isn’t so much a problem for me. If however, you find it makes a bit too much noise, cotton wool or cheap plugs in your ears will do the job.
